Winds Will Return

Since the howling winds of last Wednesday, the wind across Oklahoma has been light. Today will be another day with light winds, but gusty conditions will return tomorrow. The wind tomorrow through Thursday will bring in warmer weather, and will increase the fire danger. Hopefully the wind will leave trains alone.

I ran across a strange event that could have been a tragedy. In 1997, 18 empty railroad grain hopper cars were left alone on a track near Champaign, Illinois. The winds picked with some afternoon thunderstorms, and the train cars started moving. They eventually reached a speed of 20 mph. Unmanned train cars being blown by the wind. As the ghost train raced through Thomasboro, the mayor of the town noticed trouble and jumped on the train. He had to pull brakes on three of the cars before the train stopped, averting what could have become a disaster.

Watch our winds return tomorrow with gusts over 30 mph. With the dry ground and low humidity, we will have to monitor the fire danger.
