Dreaming of a White Christmas?

Each year people ask what our chances for a white Christmas will be. The technical answer is 5 percent. Since weather records began in 1890, there have been 6 Christmases with at least an inch of snow on the ground. A few other years have had less than an inch:
  • 1913 Trace
  • 1914 6 inches
  • 1918 5 inches
  • 1924 3 inches
  • 1939 Trace
  • 1943 1 inch
  • 1962 Trace
  • 1975 1 inch
  • 1983 Trace
  • 1987 Trace
  • 1990 Trace
  • 2002 2 inches

A 5 percent chance for a white Christmas means we will see one every 20 years. We saw one last in 2002, and before that, 1975.... so our next white Christmas is not due until about 2020.
