OHP No New Cadet Here

Posted by: Executive Producer Julie Fike

Wow. That about sums up the experience John Flick, photographer Dan Ryan and I had at the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy Friday morning.

52 cadets were in week 7 of their training. We spent about 5 hours with them and their trainers. The cadets never stopped moving from 4:30am on. See the reports posted on our morning page.

The big joke behind the scenes was that I was going to pick-up an application and apply. Of course, I responded, hello-I already have a day job! It's just like my crew to pile more on top of me. Then again, I guess it's a compliment. I supposed they think I can handle it. But let me just tell you, I'm not so sure. Those cadets and troopers are made of some tough stuff. Sure, probably most could do the required 1.5 mile, 23 push-ups (boy style) and 32 situps. Try that along with mental and physical exhaustion for 16 weeks. It makes you think twice.

I know I will definitely look at an OHP trooper differently next time I see one. As hard as it may have been getting up this Monday morning, at least you don't have to do 23 push-ups right out of the gate.
