Back To College

Posted by: John Flick

Fourteen years after graduating from the University of Kansas, there are nights I still wake up in a cold sweat having dreamed that I forgot to study for a Western Civ test or that I missed my final presentation for an Advertising/PR course. Once I calm down I realize it was only a dream and I smile in thanks that I'm not still in college. Well, now I'm going back. I've been presented a great opportunity. I will be teaching a "Broadcast Writing" course at the University of Oklahoma. For two days a week this semester I will, hopefully, help shape the minds of young journalists. I've gotten a little practice, having been a guest speaker at several schools. But those were mainly elementary and middle schools where some of the toughest questions were "have you met Carrie Underwood?" or "are you married to Tierney?". Now, I'm charged with teaching students the best ways to write a compelling story. I'm looking forward to the time back in the classroom. I'm sure I'll still wake up in a cold sweat at night. This time having dreamed I forgot to grade papers.
