Katrina: Two Years Later
Today is the two year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes the United States as ever seen.
Katrina came ashore during the early morning hours of August 29th, 2005 as a strong category 3 hurricane, just downgraded from a category 4. Sustained winds were 125mph, with higher gusts. Katrina brought a storm surge as high as 27 feet along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The bottom line two years later, things are getting better, but they are hardly the same. Having worked and lived for three years in Biloxi pre-Katrina, I have many friends and ties to that region. It has been tough on me seeing friends struggling to regain their footing. I can only imagine what is like to have lived through it. Just one year ago, my friend told me McDonalds was five-star dining there.
The region will recover, the residents are resilient. But, I find myself asking the question, "What about next time?" Sure, they are making the structures stronger and the levees higher, but how much can really be done? It's not a question of if, but when another major hurricane will strike that area. New Orleans is a city that is actually below sea level, so I think their flooding problems will always be with them.
It is great to see the human spirit alive and well along the Gulf Coast. It's also nice to have heard the stories of so many residents of Oklahoma lending a help hand to those in need, back then and even today.

Three Classes Down...
Posted by: John Flick
I'm done with my first full week as an adjunct professor at OU. I'm teaching a broadcast writing course. On Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00-4:15 I try to impart my broadcast knowledge on 16 bright, diverse, intense, funny, dedicated students.
In just three classes, I've gained new respect for teachers and professors. To stand in front of a room full of students, who are looking to you for guidance, is a daunting task. And I'm enjoying every second of it (except for grading papers... yes, I've already given two quizzes).
Teaching has made me re-examine my job as well. I'm now seeing this profession from 16 new perspectives and it's been great. I may end up learning just as much, if not MORE, than they do.
If any of you teachers out there have advice, feel free to let me know.

Vick vs. Lohan
Posted by Tierney Cook.
Micheal Vick (Atlanta Falcons Quarterback) has been in the news all day today, he has plead guilty to federal dog fighting charges.
It's been reported he helped kill some of the ill performing dogs in a dog fighting ring.
He could go to jail for 5 years for the federal offense.
I'm a huge dog lover, grew up with them my whole life.
But how is it he could go to jail for killing dogs, when Lindsey Lohan spends 1 day in jail for her second drunk driving offense.
I want to know what you think.
Should Vick get the tougher sentence for his dog abuse.
Or should Lohan spend more time for driving under the influence.
SOUND OFF.....
NOW!!!

My Niece is Singing!
Posted By Tierney Cook
Good Morning!
A few posts back I dedicated a blog to Robin Thicke.
He is an sultry soulful r and b singer that has appeared on Oprah and is currently on tour with Beyonce.
His sophomore album "The Evolution of Robin Thicke" is flying off the shelves.
I love the cd, as does my older sister Deshea.
I recently learned my 3 month old niece is a fan as well.
My sister says as soon as tiny Ryan Nicole starts crying and screaming, she puts on Robin Thicke and Ryan starts singing, or trying to sing.
I guess the love of Robin Thicke is all in the family now!

Vegas Baby Vegas

"You are so money and don't even know it." Lines from the infamous movie, "Swingers." My girls trip was refreshing but yes, we are all coming back to our day jobs.
My high-roller moment, lol, came when playing the beloved "Wheel of Fortune" slot machine. There is something so hypnotic about those darn machines. Especially when it has the sound effects and shouts at you "Wheel of Foturne." You get to spin the wheel and earn extra cash/credits. I'm such a high-roller, not, I cashed out at $35 dollars. I was up to $171 and the proverbial, why didn't I quit then, came out of my mouth. Darn those casinos, they just know I'll keep going!
Above all that, it was a good trip with my friends Melannie and Elizabeth. Both from different parts of the country and we converged in Vegas for an extended weekend. As much as it was refreshing to leave it's nice to come back to work to hear I was missed. Especially with Hurricane/Tropical Storm/Depression Erin. Dean I'm back in the mix so bring it on!
I'm Nervous!!!
Posted By Tierney Cook
I was nervous during the morning show today.
People always ask me if I get nervous doing live television, I used to but not anymore, until today!
As you all know I had some dental work done a few weeks ago, and today my temporary bridge came loose and fell out.
I quickly ran to the store and grabbed some Fixodent (to forget it) and headed to work.
I spent the morning nervous and hoping my quick fix didn't fall out mid show.
It has happened to an anchor before in Arkansas, in mid sentence his bridgework falls out.
Luckily I made it through the show, don't worry, I am headed to the dentist this morning to replace the fixodent with cement.
Have a great day!

Muddy & Sweaty in Kingfisher
Posted by Tierney Cook
Muddy and Sweaty in Kingfisher.
That was how I spent my Monday, but believe me I was not alone.
There are a lot of residents who will spent another day cleaning up from the 6 feet of water that spent Sunday morning in their homes.
I spent the day in Kingfisher as part of our continuing coverage of Tropical Storm Erin.
I spoke with one business owner, an artist whose $50,000 machine is destroyed.
It's how he makes his money, and he does not have flood insurance.
He has to start all over.
Another guy had been through three floods in 12 years, of course he is frustrated and thinking of taking his business elsewhere.
Hope you add Kingfisher and the other Oklahoma towns affected to your prayer list.

"Faded & Educated"
Posted by Tierney Cook
I spent two hours yesterday at Wal-Mart.
Don't worry it was all for a good cause.
This Sunday myself, the Sigma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., and Twice the Cutz Barbershop in Midwest City will hold the "Faded & Educated Event."
Barbers from around the metro will provide free haircuts for school kids as they head back to school, while my sorority will pass out free school supplies.
So I spent my Wednesday afternoon shopping for enough school supplies for 100 kids.
That's glue, folders, pens pencils all for 100 kids.
I think my filled baskets turned a few heads, and my long check out upset a few customers, but oh well.
I am excited about this event.
My mom is a beautician and she used to hold a similar event in Texas!
I will let you know how it goes on Monday.

Freshman Orientation!!
Posted by Tierney Cook
With school starting back this week for most metro students, it has me thinking about my first week at a Oklahoma school.
It was freshman orientation at Langston University in Fall 1997.
I was so excited to start life as a college student, I knew what I wanted to do with my life ( work in news) and was excited about taking the first step toward working in television.
When I got here I noticed there were no Langston graduates on any television stations in Oklahoma City.
Thinking that was strange I told myself, If there is ever an opening in Oklahoma City I think I will apply.
I wanted to show future students at Langston that their degree weighs the same as other college degrees in Oklahoma. Much like OU, OCU, OSU and UCO we can get jobs in television too!
I did!
Tonight I speak to the freshman class at Langston University as Freshman Orientation Week winds down there!
Can't wait to tell them my story!

Can't Get Enough

Courtesy: Google ImagesOkay, so you guys know I love dogs. I'm not a real fan of kids but I do have to admit I love one girl who's not even mine and I don't even know. Suri Cruise. Wait, wait, read me out.
Some say she's an alien baby, reference to her dad, Tom Cruise noted scientologist. But just look at her, she could be a trouble-child but she is so adorable. I would adopt her in a second. Now granted, my house isn't baby proof and I have no experience with truly caring for a child 24/7 but hey, I'm capable.
My quasi-obsession with how cute she is has even stretched among others in the newsroom. Tierney and Brianna now give me updates on new pictures caught by the paps. My defense is that we all have to have a vice, you now know mine, celebrity gossip.

Back To College
Posted by: John Flick
Fourteen years after graduating from the University of Kansas, there are nights I still wake up in a cold sweat having dreamed that I forgot to study for a Western Civ test or that I missed my final presentation for an Advertising/PR course. Once I calm down I realize it was only a dream and I smile in thanks that I'm not still in college. Well, now I'm going back. I've been presented a great opportunity. I will be teaching a "Broadcast Writing" course at the University of Oklahoma. For two days a week this semester I will, hopefully, help shape the minds of young journalists. I've gotten a little practice, having been a guest speaker at several schools. But those were mainly elementary and middle schools where some of the toughest questions were "have you met Carrie Underwood?" or "are you married to Tierney?". Now, I'm charged with teaching students the best ways to write a compelling story. I'm looking forward to the time back in the classroom. I'm sure I'll still wake up in a cold sweat at night. This time having dreamed I forgot to grade papers.

A New Member of Eyewitness News 5

Posted by: Executive Producer, Julie Fike
We have a new member of the Eyewitness News 5 in the morning team, unofficially, he's called Teddy. Just look at that face! He's the new companion for a morning show associate producer, Grace.
Teddy was adopted from the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter off southeast 29th. Grace says she wasn't sure at first that they were a match but then Teddy started following her after their visit was seemingly over. Teddy is house broken and is a good boy. As you can see by the pictures, he got his first bath. And yes, by his face, you can tell he didn't like it very much. But look at that after picture, all fluffy and happily sleeping in his new bed.
We know it's called the dog days of summer and Grace certainly has proved that. Congratulations Grace!

Grrrrr.....

Courtesy: Google ImagesCan you feel the excitment? Whatever your favorite NFL team, the countdown has begun to preseason. Last night at Soldier Field fans lined up for padded practice.
The Bears capped ticket sales at 40,000 for the event, which took place on a warm and humid night. Most of the Bears say it felt like 7 months ago. Let's hope so for this heartbroken Bears fan.
Here's the highlights from chicagobears.com (note my boyfriends-in-my-own-mind, Urlacher, Olsen) "team drills included Urlacher jumping high to deflect a Rex Grossman pass, receiver Brandon Rideau making a leaping reception with defensive backs Tyler Everett and Tim Mixon all over him and Olsen catching a pass from Grossman over the middle. "
The first game for the Bears is Saturday against the Houston Texans. Bear down Chicago Bears!

Walkign the Magnificent Mile

Posted By Tierney Cook
It's vacation time for me!!
This afternoon I head to Oprah's backyard (not literally) and visit Chicago for the first time.
I'll be there through Wednesday afternoon.
I'll be there through Wednesday afternoon.
It is my annual girl's trip with my best friend Nicole.
We started this last year.
I had a long conversation with my mom who told me I was not taking advantage of my life and living it to the fullest.
She said since I am without a husband or a child, now is the time to live it up before God sends them into my life. So that jumpstarted the "Annual Girls Trip"
I plan to eat a lot, see the sights, shop and visit the National Headquarters for my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Don't worry I will post some pic when I come back and update you on the my trip to the Windy City!!
Don't miss me too much!!
