Remembering JC Burris

Posted by Tierney Cook

I found out Friday night around 10:30.
My friend and Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper JC Burris had died.
For at least the past two years he had battled colon rectal cancer.

I had interviewed him before during the "Click it or Ticket Campaign."
He was the face of the campaign that OHP used to help remind Oklahomans to buckle up.

Then I met his wife Debra. We are in the same sorority chapter (Sigma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.)

I remember her coming to meetings giving us an update on JC.
The last time I talked to her, he was doing a lot better; out of the hospital and asking if there was anyway he could make it to Langston's basketball game.

Then he was gone.
I hope to make it to his funeral this morning, our sorority members are supposed to be flower bearers for the ceremony.

I want to dedicate this post to JC and his family. He was a really nice person who was smiling every time I saw him.

I gotta get ready!!!

Frank has been telling us for the past two days.
The snow, freezing rain, and ice is coming and I need to get ready today.
So after work, I have to run by Lowe's or Home Depot to get some salt for my driveway.

I need some good traction when I head out Thursday morning.
Also, de-icer and an ice scraper. I may have a little de-icer left, I need to check on the condition of my ice scraper.

Lastly, wash my gloves, scarves, long johns, and flannel socks. They have been locked away for months now I want them clean and fresh for the first snow storm of the season!

I got get ready...I got work to do!!!

A Better Model

Have you noticed more accurate weather forecasts recently? We have been using a new computer model as one of our tools in preparing the weather forecast. The Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) is the first weather forecasting model to be used by both research and operational meteorologists. The high resolution model has already cut errors in nighttime temperature and humidity across the eastern United States by over 50 percent. This model is also used by the US Air Force Weather Agency, and they have noticed better flight level wind forecasts in the tropics. The AFWA also says the WRF outperforms other models by over 70 percent.

The WRF is a global forecasting model, and is being used by weather agencies in Taiwan, South Korea, China and India. It is also hoped that by the end of 2007 this model will be used in forecasts that serve more than a third of the world's population. NOAA is also developing a hurricane oriented version of the WRF, to be called the HWRF.

Here is the WRF forecast for tomorrow evening. The WRF has the arctic front moving through southeast Oklahoma with thunderstorms and rain across the area. It also calls for ice and snow to develop tomorrow night.

Tick Tock

Time is running out to get any outdoor chores done before winter weather arrives. Put up your Christmas lights today or tomorrow, because it will get very cold Wednesday, and it will stay cold for a while.

We also have a winter storm to watch Wednesday night and Thursday. The normal question abound with this storm....

  • What exact track will the storm take? A jog north or south will make a huge difference between snow and ice, and between ice and rain.

  • How much moisture will there be? The difference between 1/4 and 1 inch of moisture will be a light glaze or a major storm.

One question we do not have this time is "Will it be cold enough?". It will certainly be cold enough for frozen precipitation for most of the state. The thickness of the cold air will determine whether that will be snow, sleet of freezing rain.

The graphic is a rough draft of the storm to come. The details are certain to change in the next three days, but get ready now, the cold is definitely coming.

Brrrr....

I'm bracing myself for the cold front coming into town this week. As previously posted on the blog, I recently moved from Houston. Personally, I'm not too sure about this ice/snow/sleet event for later this week. It's been awhile since I've driven in wintry weather. My dog, Buddy, shown previously, has never stepped on the white stuff. His face should be pretty interesting. Wondering where we've moved to! My friends have warned me to get the shovel out and clear a path for him outside in the yard. Well, you do what you got to do for your loved ones.

Professionally, I've got my game face on. I'm ready to cover all angles in the Metro and keep you informed. I love covering weather events. I know how frustrating it can be to drive on ice, black ice, snow and slush. Sometimes it can be down-right scary. So, keep it tuned to us, as you know John, Tierney and Frank have a serious side but they have a light side and will help all of us make it through, hopefully with a smile on our face. See you in the morning! - Julie

Being Bond

Posted by: John Flick

As a kid (and now as a big kid) I imagined being a secret agent.
I saw the new Bond movie over the weekend. I could barely stay in my seat during the first action sequence. I was ready to be the next Bond. Then came a torture scene and my enthusiasm waned a bit. (If you've seen the movie you know how painful it is to watch... my voice raises an octave just thinking about it).
Nonetheless, I thought I'd check out the CIA and see if a news anchor could cut it in the world of espionage.
The website is pretty slick and they even have a new feature... a personality test to see what qualities you'd bring to the agency.
You should check it out.

https://www.cia.gov/careers/index.html

I took the test and came out as a "daring thrill-seeker." I had Tierney take it. She's an "innovative pioneer."
I may be too old to join the CIA so my super spy capabilities will have to be used figuring out who's stealing Wheat Thins from my desk. Tierney, I have my eye on you and your "innovative pioneering" ways.

We're #11!

A web site that is dedicated to "healthy and sustainable living", www.SustainLane.com, has compiled a list of the top 50 U.S. cities based on their risk of natural disasters. The site takes into consideration hurricanes, hail, tornadoes and earthquakes and ranks each city based on the amount of damage they can cause.

Miami, FL topped the list based on their hurricane threat. New Orleans came in #2, followed by Oakland, CA and San Francisco, both at risk from earthquakes. Honolulu rounded out the top 5, due to their earthquake, tsunami and storm surge flooding threats. Tied for #50 in the list are Mesa, AZ and Milwaukee, WI.

Oklahoma City comes in at #11.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I want to say thanks for checking out our section of KOCO.COM.
I hope you like the topics we choose to blog about everyday.

I want to take time this holiday to highlight the things in my life I am thankful for.
In no particular order...

MY HEALTH (In 28 years I've never been in the hospital for anything serious.)

MY TWO SISTERS (It's great to have two people to share secrets, clothes and shoes with.)

MY PARENTS (They have given up much of their lives to make sure I could make my dream of working in the news possible. They are supportive and my #1 cheerleaders.)

MY NEPHEW (I don't have kids yet, but I get a warm feeling whenever my 8 year old nephew Devin smiles at me, I think it's getting me ready for my own kids.)

MY FRIENDS (Whether here or in another state, I blessed and thankful to have a group of true blue girlfriends that make me smile, laugh and cry.)

THE KOCO-5 MORNING TEAM ( I started off on the show as a reporter, I enjoyed my time out tin the field, but I love sitting next to John and Frank every morning they make it fun and easy to come to work. Thank goes for the production crew too!!)

MY FAITH (It gets me through the good and bad times.)

MY MATERIAL THINGS (Not jewelry or purses, but my house, the clothes on my back and the shoes on my feet.)

MY LIFE (It's been a good one so far. No complaints.)

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It will be a warm Thanksgiving, and our afternoon high temperature will be close to the daily record high.... but no where near the record for Thanksgiving. Looking up daily records is pretty easy, but getting records for Thanksgiving takes a bit more time.... remember that Thanksgiving falls on a different date each year.

The warmest Thanksgiving on record was in 1965, when it warmed to 84 degrees. Today will mark the 13th time that we have warmed to at least 70 degrees on Thanksgiving. The coldest turkey day was back in 1993, when the morning low was 15 degrees, and it warmed to just 28 degrees in the afternoon. Back in 1919, we had a Thanksgiving with a high of just 28 degrees as well.

The rainiest Thanksgiving was in 1896, with 1.56 inches of rain. We have also had snow on the holiday. Seven times in Oklahoma City, with the snowiest Thanksgiving in 1968, when 1.4 inches fell.

Turducken?????

Posted by: John Flick

Happy Thanksgiving.
This morning we talked turkey and something called "Turducken." Supposedly it's a popular way to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. I was mystified. I had never heard of this.

Executive Producer Julie Fike (who seems to be the Turducken expert) assured me it's very popular and she used to have it in Texas... hmmm.

I did some research and found it's a "de-boned turkey, stuffed with a de-boned duck, stuffed with a small de-boned chicken." WOW! That's sounds like a workout. (Why not throw in a partridge in a pear tree for good measure?)

I also found this poultry concotion goes by "Chuckey." So, I've come up with some other names: Chickduckey, Duckeychick, Chickturduck... the possibilities are endless.

Whatever you eat, enjoy the holiday and save a piece of "Pumpcherrapple" pie for me.

Drought in the Rain Forest

The rainforest on Vancouver Island, British Columbia averages 10 feet 11 inches of rain per year. The wet season is winter, but even in the summer the driest month (August) averages 3.9 inches of rain. (In Oklahoma City, we have only two months that average over 3.9 inches of rain, May and June).

This year, the rainforest's dry season was particularly dry.... no rain fall in August. This caused an emergency in the resort town of Tofino. The town ran out of drinking water. Drinking water had to be trucked in around the clock from Ucluelet, 19 miles away. The dry weather also raised concerns of forest fires.

Can you imagine a place that averages 131 inches of rain per year running out of water? Here in Oklahoma City we average 36 inches of rain per year, and we usually have plenty of water.

Wait For It...

Posted by: Executive Producer, Julie Fike

It's nearly Thanksgiving and as you can see by the previous posts, we're all excited. It got me to thinking about the day after Thanksgiving and music. No, I'm not thinking of the great musak found in the area malls when shopping. I'm thinking of the continuous Christmas music found on the radio dial! I'm a sucker for the season and it can be found in my car.

Now for some behind-the-scenes dirt, guess who's also a sucker for Christmas tunes....Adam Slinger! You thought I was going to say Tierney didn't you. She may be but Slinger is the real softy of the group. Not only does he have the radio stations ready he's also got all kinds of artists' Christmas albums. Some you might not expect like, Mariah Carey or Clay Aiken. That's right "the Aiken and Adam" jamming out to Holy Night.

While I don't have any Christmas albums, it does warm my heart whenever I hear any Christmas tunes. Just to jump on the Tierney bandwagon, my favorite, Sleigh Ride. It takes me back to when I was a little girl, riding in the Arkansas Boston Mountains in the snow with my favorite horse, also named Julie. Giddyup!

Turkey Day in the Kitchen

I, by no means, claim to be a master chef... nor baker. But since I won't be home for Thanksgiving, I'm attempting to bake a pecan pie -- Thanksgiving isn't Thanksgiving without my pecan pie! I have the "secret" family recipe... but I don't trust myself to make the crust so I just bought that. And today is the day I'll see if I can actually turn a pile of ingredients into something edible. I'm starting early, and I have enough stuff to try a second time. Stand by for the update tomorrow... and I'll drop a picture on the blog if it turns out. Otherwise, I'll have Adam pick up a pie for me while he's out shopping (see entry "I Don't Cook" below).

What's in Tierney's CD Player

I just noticed something this morning on my way to work.
I bought a CD a month ago and it is still in my car's CD player! In heavy rotation!!!!
I can't get enough of it, I may need to seek help.

The CD is "The Evolution of Robin Thicke."
That's Robin to the right of the screen.

He's Alan Thicke's son(the dad off Growing Pains) and this is actually his second album.
He's won Grammy's for writing songs for other artists and up until now I had no idea he even existed.
His latest album is getting critical acclaim, but no one is buying it. I can't understand why!
He's a blue eyed soul singer that reminds me of Marvin Gaye and John Legend mixed together!
My favorites on the CD, numbers 2,34,5,7,8,9!
His voice is raspy, gentle and addictive.

My baby sister told me about the CD; pleading with me to pick it up. Thanks Laura good call.
So If you ever see me driving down the street and I am singing my heart out...I'm probably blasting the "Evolution of Robin Thicke."
If you like soul music I think you will like this one.
I do!
It would make a great Christmas Gift for the soul music lover in your family.
Alright no more album reviews from me...just wanted you to know what I am listening to.

"I Don't Cook"

Posted by Adam Slinger

I don’t cook. I can’t cook. I don’t really like cooking. In fact, for probably the past six years or so, my diet has revolved around five different easy-made-menu items. It’s sad. I know. I’m aware of the problem.

Truly though, it’s never really been an issue for me… Until now… I’m supposed to bring a homemade dish to the Eyewitness News 5 Thanksgiving Day lunch. (Most of us will be working on Thursday.)

My dilemma is as obvious as the answer: I’m buying something.

So, what does everyone recommend the take-out king bring? Bread. That’s it.

Apparently, my inabilities to cook also correlate with my grocery shopping skills. (Actually, that’s probably a correct assumption, but someone could have told me what to purchase for the feast.)

I suppose this is how Thanksgiving should be. We should all offer what we’re able to offer. I can handle bread. It’s included on my grocery list each week. I’m familiar with the grain row at the supermarket.

However, I still feel like there’s something else I can do. Something bigger.... Would bringing in bread be enough? Probably not. Perhaps, if I dig around in my kitchen enough, watch the Food Network and really think about it… I can find some butter in my fridge.

What? Were you expecting that I would ultimately try cooking something? Like I said… I don’t cook.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Trainer Laura's Arms!

Did you see trainer Laura's guns on the Morning Show today!
She comes on every Tuesday to help us all get in shape.
This morning she highlighted how we all can be buff and tough up top.

This week she did not do a demostration starring John Flick like she normally does...HMMM I wonder why!!

It really reinforces that during the holiday there are ways to stay fit and trim and still enjoy all the meats and treats!

We have a clip of her on this website!

A Warm Lake = More Snow

Lake effect snow season is just getting started, and folks in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan will get a work out this winter. The lake just got through a summer with lake water temperatures well above normal, and that should lead to a bonanza of snow this winter.

Last winter and spring were rather mild, and there was an unusual lack of lake ice last winter. Add a period of above normal air temperatures and more sunshine than normal, and the lake is very warm. This summer that was great news for swimmers. Lake temperatures hovered around 68 degrees all summer long, peaking at 73 degrees near Isle Royale. The Lake Superior water temperature was the warmest since the early 1980s.

When cold arctic air moves over the lake this winter, the warmer lake will yield more snow. One of the processes that generate lake effect snow is the difference in temperature between the lake and the air. The warmer the water, or the colder the air, the more snow will fall. A warmer lake will also take longer to freeze this winter, so the lake effect snow season will be longer than most years. Parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have had over 300 inches of snow in a year.

Winds Will Return

Since the howling winds of last Wednesday, the wind across Oklahoma has been light. Today will be another day with light winds, but gusty conditions will return tomorrow. The wind tomorrow through Thursday will bring in warmer weather, and will increase the fire danger. Hopefully the wind will leave trains alone.

I ran across a strange event that could have been a tragedy. In 1997, 18 empty railroad grain hopper cars were left alone on a track near Champaign, Illinois. The winds picked with some afternoon thunderstorms, and the train cars started moving. They eventually reached a speed of 20 mph. Unmanned train cars being blown by the wind. As the ghost train raced through Thomasboro, the mayor of the town noticed trouble and jumped on the train. He had to pull brakes on three of the cars before the train stopped, averting what could have become a disaster.

Watch our winds return tomorrow with gusts over 30 mph. With the dry ground and low humidity, we will have to monitor the fire danger.

Another Hidden Talent Revealed

Another hidden talent revealed.
This morning live on the air I caught an M&M in my mouth.
John threw it my way, and it was magical.
I have to say Aaron, John and Julie missed it every time.
I think my win is thanks to John.
He has a great arm, there was the perfect curve in the air, and
just like that I caught it.

We did it after highlighting the "Grape Guy" out of Texas. He caught 116 grapes in his mouth in 3 minutes.
I am not that good.
Hope you have a great weekend.

The Pictures Are In

Posted by: Executive Producer, Julie Fike

First off, why does Tierney have to call me out about not blogging? Here we go girl this is why, I was waiting for the pictures of Pat Green and his Aunt Pat. My girlfriend, Elizabeth finally got them out of her digital camera. Thanks girl.

As I look at the pictures of me and my friend, I'm thinking about the holidays coming up. Some might get a little sad during the holidays because maybe you might be alone but I think of all the great times I've had during the past year with my family and friends. Just like this special moment with Liz. Times can be tough but just like the Oklahoma weather, things soon change. Liz, I can't wait until we have more adventures next year and who knows who we'll end up meeting wearing our killer shoes! (see previous blog)

Thanks to my friends with great ears to listen and strong arms to lift me up, namely, Sunny, Roger, Heather, Cox, Mel, Saxon, Laura, Eric, Chad, David, Steve, Brett, Foley and Parnell.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Posted by Adam Slinger

That weather yesterday--wicked.

I spent the majority of the morning outside in that fierce wind and piercing rain. At one point in the broadcast, the four of us were talking about the actual "feel" of the, then, current conditions. I told them that the worst part was during those wind gusts because with it, along came the rain drops. It actually felt like little pins and needles scratching my face. (They weren't too sympathetic.)

The rest of the day, my OTHER co-workers, though, actually seemed somewhat concerned for me. Most people don't like being cold and wet. The thing is--I love covering weather. Nature's power is a constant reminder of why local news is crucial. There is something exhilarating about being in a windstorm, a thunderstorm or even a snowstorm.

Journalists are often criticized for putting themselves in harm's way during severe weather. When I covered Hurricane Rita as it made landfall in Southeast Texas, some of my friends and family members didn't understand why I would put myself at risk. As I told them then and as I tell people now: Our goal is to inform you, and there is no greater need for information than during a time of uncertain change or emergency.

Granted, yesterday's strong gusts were not tornadic, but it's conditions like that which keep us on our toes. It prepares us for the big one.

And yesterday's weather was absolutely necessary to cover as we did. In Moore, a school was closed down because four utility poles were knocked over by the heavy wind. Even though we reported the closing, parents still showed up at 8:20am ready to drop off their kids for the day. Just another small reminder that you should be starting your day with "Eyewitness News 5 In the Morning." We'll tell you what you need to know as you start your day... and in between all that information you're consuming, we'll hopefully have something to make you smile.

Although I did not laugh too hard at Tierney's look-a-like blog from earlier this week. It even made it's way onto the show. (Thank you, Julie.) The picture they used of me to find a look-a-like--my kindergarten picture. I will find something to get back at TC. It's gotta be good. Something just as wicked as the weather.

No Ice Yet

This morning was the coldest so far this season for a good part of Oklahoma. Temperatures were below freezing across much of the state, with many areas down into the 20s.Even though it is so cold at night, we still have a long way to go before we start to see ice forming on Oklahoma lakes.

Before ice forms on a pond or lake, the entire body of water must cool to 39 degrees. Water is such a unique liquid. Like most liquids, the density of water changes with temperature. What makes water unique is that it is at it's most dense point when it is at 39 degrees. At temperatures above 39, warmer water rises to the top. When wading in a lake in the summer, the warmest water will be at the surface, and it will be cooler down at your toes.

In the winter, when a lake cools, the colder water will sink to the bottom of the lake. However, when the lake cools to 39 degrees, the colder water starts to float to the top. Water at 34 degrees is less dense than water at 39 degrees. Another quality unique to water it that when liquid turns to solid, the solid is less dense than the liquid. This is what allows ice to float on top of water.

Right now, Oklahoma lakes are running between 50 and 65 degrees. Even as it gets below freezing at night, it is going to be a while before the lakes freeze over.

I only had 4 hours of sleep last night!!!

First of all...
I want to call out John, Julie, Adam, Priscilla and Frank.
Where are your blogs???
I think they are slacking a bit...I'm just saying.
I need another weather phenomenon Frank!!!!
Bring it on!!!

Okay now to why I was out late last night.
I got to go to the special screening of the "Dreamgirls."
It does not open in theatres until December.
My mom took me to see the musical stage play when I was young, real young.
It came out in 1981, the original starred Loretta Divine, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Jennifer Holliday.
It's set in the 60's and is about three girls from Detroit who start a singing group and take the world by storm.
But their ride is bumpy. Breakups, infidelity, children out of wedlock its all weaved together and set to great hits that take you back to the Motown era.
THE PLAY WON 6 TONY AWARDS!!

Enough background, this time around Beyonce', American Idol's Jennifer Hudson and newcomer Anika Noni Rose take over the lead roles. Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover and Oscar Winner Jamie Foxx is also in the movie
I had a great time at the movie.
Watch out for Jennifer Hudson, I know Beyonce' is a big star and won a lot of Grammys
but in this movie Jennifer is so good it makes you say..."Beyonce' who?"

I hope you check it out when it hits theatres in December.
I think you will like it.

Oh yeah and sorry to the guy sitting in front of me last night.
My friend and I were singing off key all during the movie!!!

I love you Emmitt Smith!

Posted by Tierney Cook

For much of my life that is how I pictured Emmitt Smith.

In blue and silver, #22 plastered across his chest.

I am from Dallas and have been a Cowboys fan for years.

My family used to have Superbowl Parties every year...I remember it being so stressful wanting "Da Boys" to bring another one back home.

Now I found myself stressed out again, every Wednesday night, the results show for "Dancing with the Stars."

Emmitt has to win tonight. He just has to. Now when I daydream and think of Emmitt, he is not in the blue and silver speeding across the inzone...but doing the Samba in a shiny emerald sleeveless shirt.

He's not holding the pigskin, but the hands of his partner.
I have to admit, I don't normally vote during reality shows, but because it's you Emmitt and you asked me to VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!; I put a call in. Okay 3 calls in.

Good Luck Emmitt You're the best Ever!

Fixing Global Warming

With many politicians and atmospheric scientists concerned about global warming, a few of them are now offering theories to fix the problem. Here are two of the more radical plans recently suggested.

German scientist Paul Crutzen is a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, and is actually a Nobel Prize winner. His solution is to inject sulfur particles into the upper atmosphere. This would reflect a portion of the sun's energy back into outer space, which would cool the planet. This theory would work in much the same manner that a volcanic eruption cools the planet. When Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991, the global temperature fell by 1/2 degree Celsius. Sulfur particles launched into the stratosphere would remain up there for 1-2 years before settling back to Earth. Crutzen suggest launching the particles into the atmosphere with either high altitude balloons or artillery shells. His theory would cost $25 billion-$50 billion to release enough sulfates for two years.

Another global warming fix is from Charles Harvey, an associate professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is suggesting storing liquefied carbon dioxide at the bottom of the ocean. There are already plans to store CO2 in underground storage facilities, but on land they leak, and the CO2 will eventually get back into the atmosphere. Liquid CO2, stored at the bottom of the ocean is denser than water, and because it is so cold, it would seal itself with a solid ice like dome. This would be a permanent storage place for excess CO2. It is estimated that the total CO2 produced by the U.S. in a year can be stored in an area of 80 square kilometers, and the U.S. has enough seafloor within it's territory to store excess CO2 for thousands of years. There was no estimate on how much this would cost.

Frank Goes eBay "Dancing"

Posted by: John Flick

About a week ago on the morning show I gave Tierney and Frank "Dancing With The Stars" posters (courtesy of our promotions department). Both appeared genuinely appreciative of my gesture. Well, shortly after the newscast, I found one of the posters "abandoned" near the copy machine.
Then Frank remarked (with a smile) he could probably make some money off his poster selling it on eBay. So he put it up for auction.

Tune in tomorrow morning when I confront Frank and Tierney about the posters... and we'll check eBay to update the bids.

Also, our personal trainer is back in studio tomorrow morning about 6:15 am. Please email me if you have any questions for her. jflick@hearst.com

Posted by: Julie Fike, Executive Producer

As many of you know, Texas singer-songwriter, Pat Green rocked the Riverwind Casino in Norman Saturday night. It was a sold out crowd. Pat and his band put on a terrific show.

Beforehand, I along with my friend Elizabeth met Pat. Thanks to him as his "people" Sean and Jeff for the opportunity. Pat was gracious and very funny. He was cutting up and shared a secret with Elizabeth, who was sporting my red stilletto heels. He was wearing red socks! We laughed and were on cloud 9 and made our way to our seats.

We soon found out we were sitting next to his Aunt Pat! She's an avid Eyewitness News 5 In the Morning viewer. I introduced myself and she asked "Are You Fried Green Tomatoes?" I laughed so hard and told her that yes, indeed, that was my arm on camera.

Hopefully, in the next couple of days, I'll be able to share our pictures. Elizabeth is getting help on moving the pictures from her digital camera to the computer. Stay tuned!

It's Friday!!!

TGIF!
It's finally here.
I try to have a ritual on Fridays.
When I get off work, I grab some lunch.
I don't eat out during the week, so Fridays are my days to splurge.
Today I am feeling like Sushi, so I will probably pop by one of the many places in OKC to get my California and Philadelphia Roll fix.

After lunch, it's nap time.
I normally sleep Friday afternoon for 3 to 4 hours!!!
Yes that's right.
I need to catch up on the sleep I missed during the week.

When I get up, Oprah or Eyewitness News Five is usually on.
I hop in the shower, and start the second part of my day.

Now I am refreshed and ready to meet my friends for dinner or a movie.
Or maybe catch up on my DVR list of programs I slept through during the week.
And I am back on track for Saturday morning.
This way I won't wake up at 3am on the weekends!

I know it's crazy but It's my life and I like it!
Have a great weekend!!!

Flashback

Posted by Adam Slinger

Enjoy the flashback tomorrow. Sophia Reza will be filling in on "Eyewitness News 5 In the Morning," since I'll be working Saturday. As many of you remember, Sophia was working the mornings before I arrived in June.

Let's see if John and Tierney give her a hard time, as they often do with me during the broadcast. If they don't... you better believe I will be blogging about it.

I DVR the show... So, I'll be watching.

"Sick" Uh huh Right

Posted by: Julie Fike

Okay, so, you've seen on the blog about Tierney feeling under the weather. She wants to drop it but just one more blog T. I don't buy the "sick" thing for a second. I believe it's a great excuse to avoid the demise of your undefeated air hockey record. That's right. I haven't forgotten. I will give you time to get over your "illness." Just kidding girl, get felling better.

Anyway, I wanted to also share with you what a good friend sent to me from overseas. Steve was in London on business and found this place called "Arkansas Cafe." He thought of me and sent me this picture. Isn't that nice? I was raised in Fort Smith and couldn't get over the name of the restaurant. I guess, Londoners are crazy for barbecue. Just like Oklahoma, there's no shortage of great barbecue places in Arkansas. There's also no shortage of Arkansas jokes that Oklahomans love to tell me. I'm going to put fuel to the fire, tune in tomorrow, Friday, November 10, and you'll see a diehard Arkansas fan at his best. See you starting at 5am!

Too Many Camels

In the Dhofar Mountains in Oman, there is a rare forest... one that grows in the desert. The trees get water not from rain, but from low lying clouds. This cloud forest is endangered due to the explosion of the camel population. Camels are a sign of wealth and prestige in Oman, and as the wealth of the sultanate has increased, so have the number of camels. Scientists are now worried about deforestation due to over grazing by the camels. It is also feared that once the forest is gone, it will never return. The trees capture moisture from the clouds, and without them it is feared that the grasslands will not be able to capture enough moisture to allow new trees to grow.

Great Birthday Parties!

My 28th birthday is on Sunday.
I am not a big fan of birthdays but my friends here in Oklahoma City always make sure I have a great time for my birthday.

It made me think today about the best birthday parties I have ever had.
When I was 6 or 7 I had the usual, birthday party at McDonald's.
I had streamers, balloons and a white sheet cake with a sugar Grimace in the middle. (He's the purple character in the picture above).

Then the classic skating party! Why is it when your 13 you can skate for hours.
I took my little sister Lauren a few weeks ago, I could not last 15 minutes.

But my older sister, Deshea had the best party. 13 years old, right around the time "Purple Rain" came out, she had a Prince party!

Her cake had a picture or Prince drawn on it, complete with gel icing for the jheri curl the pop singer used to wear.
It was great!

Well this weekend, for my birthday my friends and I are having an adult pajama party.
Complete with pizza, uno attack, movies and chats about boys.

Happy Birthday to me!!

Honorary Okie

Posted By: Priscilla

Hey everyone! I'm the newest member of the morning crew, but no one sees me because I work behind the scenes. I produce the 5 a.m.-6 a.m. show, and started working here in September.

Don't hold this against me, but I come from Texas. I know, it's tough to hear. I come from a small North Texas town that's only about 45 mniutes away from the OK border. When I moved up here a lot of my friends said, "you're a Texan at heart so don't become an Okie!" But you know what? That's kinda hard because Oklahoma City is great!

My husband and three dogs moved up here with me. Yes, I said three dogs. I have two rat terriors and a chihuahua. Daisy, Jasper and PePe, respectivly.

PePe is the latest edition to our family. I found him nearly a year ago at the last TV station I worked at...literally. He was a stray dog that wondered into our news studio. He looked like he had been really mistreated so I had to keep him and show him a good home. Now he's a happy dog!

A Healthy Commitment

Posted by Adam Slinger

Tierney's sick?!?!?

Our desks are right next to each other. Great. Looks like I'll be falling ill this weekend. In fact, I think I'm starting to feel a little scratch in my throat, right now.

As for the real news, Election Day has come and gone. In the state government, it looks like the Democrats have the upper hand. By how much, though, remains to be seen. The Democratic Lieutenant Governor-Elect will play a crucial role this next session, as the the State Senate is now split 50/50 with 24 Democrats and 24 Republicans. Since the Lt. Governor has the tie-breaking vote, Democrats will presumably have a better chance to more their agenda forward--They'll have the Governor, the Lt. Governor and, consequently, the State Senate.

Republicans really wanted to take control of the Senate. Never before in history have they come this close to controlling the entire legislative branch in Oklahoma. They almost succeeded, too, only falling short of one seat.

The GOP did maintain control of the State House of Representatives, losing just one spot. In some districts, the votes were very close; for example, the race for State Representative in District 25 down in Ada was down to the wire. The "unofficial" results show that the Democratic candidate won by TWO votes.

Election night was busy at the station... Or so I heard. As the returns came in, I was actually asleep, preparing for an early (or should I say, earlier) start to my day. Our overnight photographer, Dan Ryan, said that nearly everyone was working when he arrived just before 11pm.

We take this type of coverage seriously--It's been our commitment to inform you as much as we can about the candidates. It's not a coincidence our election coverage is branded "Commitment 2006." I hope we accomplished our goal and gave you a healthy portion of election information.

I hope you'll be consuming a healthy portion of Vitamin C, as well. I would recommend it for anyone that sits next to Tierney Cook while she's "under the weather." (TC, Get well!)

If Tierney Gets Me Sick...

Posted by: John Flick

Tierney is sick and sitting inches from me on the set. She's always on the verge of a sneeze. So, if you notice I lean away from her you'll know I'm trying to stay out of her line of fire.
She's a trooper though and is so heavily medicated, it's a wonder she can read the teleprompter.

Election day has come and gone, and things will be interesting in Oklahoma. The Senate is split between Republicans and Democrats and the person who could hold the swing vote on key issues is the newly elected Lt. Governor, Jari Askins. She was on our show this morning and thinks both sides will get along better than people expect. We'll see. She was very gracious, along with newly-elected Congresswoman Mary Fallin who also stopped by. Both only had a couple hours sleep after their victories last night.

Remember, every Tuesday we'll have personal trainer Laura Gurlach in to help us all get in shape. Please email me if you have any questions for her. jflick@hearst.com

Post Election Blog!

Posted by Tierney Cook

After months of bringing you the latest on the candidates and issues in Oklahoma, We have concluded Commitment 2006.

This morning it was like a lightning speed show of reaction, live interviews, and results from yesterday's election.

It was all new to me who won the seats up for grabs.
As you know I have been sick the last few days.
I took some strong medicine and went to sleep before 5pm yesterday afternoon.
I am trying to lick this cold that has me feeling like the pits.

But before I made it an early night yesterday, I met the young lady I will be tutoring at Emerson.

She is a high school junior at Emerson with two cute kids and a desire to be a massage therapist.
I never asked her if I could blog about her so I will leave out the specifics of her name and such.
Yesterday she showed me the workbook I would be helping her with, it's Algebra 2.
It's funny, when I was in high school I always said I would never use that stuff in the real world.
Guess I was wrong.

Warming Up

Some unseasonably warm weather for the next two days with afternoon temperatures in the 80s. Since it is so warm, I thought I would blog about some cold winter weather.... some extreme cold weather.

February 1936, the statewide average temperature in North Dakota was -13.1. The town of Amenia spent most of 47 straight days below zero... most of 47 days. On January 30, the temperature warmed to +1 for a couple hours. In parshall, ND, the temperature dropped to -60 on February 15.... still the state record.

In 1843, Fort Snelling, Minnesota spent 60 straight days below freezing. To cap it off, at the end of this stretch, they spent 8 days straight where the temperature did not get above -15.

And finally, how about some snow. The Great Blizzard of 1888 paralyzed the East Coast. Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston were all shut down due to heavy snow, and parts of New York state and southern New England had drifts of 30 to 40 feet that buried some homes.

So, enjoy the warm weather, because you know winter is not too far away.

Did I sound Funny Today???

<
Posted by Tierney Cook

Did you hear it?
The infection growing in my nose and throat?
It's there!

This time every year I get sick.
Either strep throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis or just a major cold!
This year it is feeling like a major cold.
That's good because with that I only need over the counter medication.
Don't worry I started self medicating last night.
I will have this cold licked by Friday!!!
I better my birthday is on Sunday and nothing is worse than being sick on your birthday.

Despite my sore throat and stuffy nose, I will get out and vote today!
There are many state questions that I need to brush up on.
My sorority sister (Tamya) sent me an email listing all the state questions on the ballot this year.
She is an attorney and has a knack for breaking down legal jargon so that you and I can understand it.
Thanks Tamya.
Oh yeah besides voting, and taking a lot of medicine this afternoon, I start my first day of tutoring at Emerson High School in downtown Oklahoma City.

I am really excited to meet the young lady I will be mentoring and tutoring.
I will tell you all about her in tomorrow's blog!

Man I will be busy today!

This blog is getting fierce. It's probably good that John and Frank are staying out of the Air Hockey Challenge. I guess Adam and I are just naturally competitive people. Besides, Tierney called me out specifically. I adore her but you can't back down right?

Anyway, to a more friendly subject, the fried green tomatoes. They turned out great and I had to stop "taste testing," them last night. My dog, Buddy, was licking his chops with all the smells coming from the kitchen.

He's a mutt. Half lab, half shar-pei. Everyone always asks, how did that work? I have no idea but I rescued him from Texas. He was found on the side of the highway in a box with 11 other brothers and sisters. I just couldn't resist his wrinkled forehead. I'm sure just like your furry family member, he's more than willing to sample anything in the kitchen.

However, the fried foods will have to wait a couple of weeks. I have to be in top shape for the Air Hockey Challenge. I don't want to have any excuses when Tierney and I hit the table. When is that again Tierney?

Rare Japan Tornado

Tornadoes are rare in Japan, but one touched down today in Samora, which is in the far north of the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Early reports have nine people killed and at least 15 injured. Most of the casualties were from two pre-fabricated buildings that were destroyed. The buildings were being used as homes and offices by workers who were building a tunnel for a road through a mountain. About 100 workers were involved in the project. The tornado also destroyed several homes and tore roofs off of others.

Wide Awake

Posted by Adam Slinger

We all hate not getting enough sleep. It's evident for the morning staff when one of us doesn't get the eight hours required. We can get a little feisty. Although for us, six hours of rest is the practicing norm. So, when we do get a moment for some shut eye--we utilize it.

For the rest of the week, it now looks like my sleep schedule will be... off. I came home around 2pm on Monday and crashed on my couch. (I thought I would take about an hour nap.) Turns out, that 60 minute nap became a full night. Next thing I know--midnight. I'm wide awake.

It's currently 2am Tuesday, I just finished watching all my DVR'd programs, which includes "Eyewitness News 5 at Ten" and am just waiting for the time to pass...

Guess I'll head into work a little earlier to prepare for today's show. It's election day and that means that the rest of the staff will be up late tonight taking in the election returns. Make sure you watch us for the next 24 hours for all the results! Okay, two times you don't need to watch--when you're voting... and when you're sleeping... or trying to sleep.

YUMMY!!!!

I am not a big meat eater. I love vegetables and I have entertained the idea of being a vegetarian. One year I lasted 9 months without eating red meat! I am thinking about doing it again for my 2007 New Year's Resolution.
As you will notice at the top of the list is Green Tomatoes.
I want to thank all the people that sent in emails regarding recipes for Fried Green Tomatoes.
Julie is going to fry them up tonight and we will taste them on the morning show.

I tested out the fried green tomatoes at Ann's Chicken Fry. A viewer told me that is where I should go for great fried green tomatoes.
She was right! Thanks Patty, they were good!!!!

Before I go...to Julie, Slinger and whoever else is talking smack about my hidden talent on the air hockey board....BRING IT!!!!!

I promise NOT to go easy on you.

Tierney

My Mouth is Watering

The tomatoes are out of my hands, and now I am just waiting to taste fried green tomatoes tomorrow. Last week I picked a bunch of green tomatoes before the freeze. Usually, they just sit on my window sill until they turn red or shrivel into nothing. This year I was looking for something to do with them while they were still green, and we mentioned this Friday morning, and promptly got several recipes for fried green tomatoes emailed to us. Julie has the tomatoes, and she is going to fry them up today, and we are going to eat them tomorrow. Yum!

I also picked all my peppers last week, and ended up with four quarts, jarred and pickled. This year was by far my biggest pepper haul in the past 6 years.

Tierney, It's On

Posted by : Julie Fike

So, Tierney has thrown down the gauntlet to the entire "Eyewitness News 5: In the Morning," team. See the blog below, she basically called us all out to try and beat her at her "hidden talent," air hockey. I accpet the challenge. Tierney, any time, anywhere. We'll take the KOCO Cam as evidence of your demise.

On another note, be sure to tune in tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7. I'm going to fry up Frank's green tomatoes and we'll have a taste test on the show. A big thanks to you, the viewers, for the recipes you emailed. Some are complicated, others are easier. I love to cook however, I've noticed most of the recipes I know contain about 4 ingredients and take only one pot or pan. I warned John, Frank and Tierney that there might not be very many samples. I just might have to check my work many times over, ya know, just to make sure they taste alright.

See you in the morning!

Blinded by the Light

Posted by Adam Slinger

It's been a few days since I've had a moment to update the old blog. The reason: I'm working on a story for later this month that is taking up all of my time. I can't tell ya what it is either... Not yet. Here's a hint though--It will reveal something pretty gross (re: cleanliness) about someone on "Eyewitness News 5 In the Morning."

So, do we have any fans of our new morning promo that's been on the air? We LOVE it. In it, John, Frank, Tierney and I all throw a remote control from one to the other while telling you a little bit about our newscast. It took me, roughly, 30 takes to catch that remote control the way they wanted it. (Not my fault.) To frame the shot right, our promotions team had to throw it RIGHT at my head. (Fine, I can handle that.) But they chucked it from behind this bright light--So, I couldn't see it until it was just about to hit me! After about ten attempts, we finally came down to a system where they would countdown from "3" and at "1," I would reach out my hand hoping that I could see it, say the line, and catch it... Periodically, I did. The promo is proof that I got one take right. (Hey, they said it took Frank a couple of times, too.)

There ya go. A little inside information on the production of "Eyewitness News 5 In the Morning." As we get closer to the air-date, I'll post more on that time-consuming story I'm writing.

Oh, note to Tierney... I could beat you in air hockey. Like the promo shoot, it may take me about 30 tries, but I'd ultimately beat you in one game. (Read Tierney's blog below...)

Tierney's Hidden Natural Talent

Posted by Tierney Cook

I mention that my favorite things to do are volunteer, sleep and stay indoors.
If you watch the show you know that.
But I do have a hidden natural talent that many people don't know about.

Air Hockey!!!!!!!!

I am for some reason a pro at air hockey.
My talent was discovered in a sports restaurant in Houston.
My cousin was playing air hockey and I thought I would give it a try.
I beat him 4 times in a row.
A couple of people at the restaurant saw the beating...and asked if they could take me on.
8 rounds and 4 people later I was still the champ.

I don't know where it comes from. I had never played air hockey before.
But I am undefeated after 7 years playing the game.
No one has ever beat me.

I look all sweet and innocent, but when that first burst of air comes out of the machine, I am a force to be reckoned with.
I bet I could beat all of the morning team, even Executive Producer Julie!!!!

Maybe that is a challenge!!!

Undefeated

Tall Tierney?

Posted by: John Flick

Occasionally on this blog, I'll answer questions people ask me when I'm off the job.
Some folks want to know how tall Tierney is. I hope she doesn't mind me giving this away. If it does she'll just end up punching me in the shoulder like she does at least 18 times during the show.
I'm close to 6 feet tall and Tierney reaches about 5'3" (on an especially poofy haired day). There's alot of magic going on behind the scenes so that we appear of simialr height. Tierney sits on a cushion at the desk and when we have to stand at the plasma screen together, she's on a box. At times she's hooked up to an elaborate pulley system that helps her "levitate" to my height, as well (ok, I'm kidding about that one).
Tierney may be small in stature, but she's big in attitude... I mean personality. :)
Have a great weekend!!

Frank's "Friend"

Posted by: Julie Fike

As you've seen on our blog, Frank has said goodbye to his garden. Did you see the beautiful green tomatoes? He doesn't know what to do with them. Well, I've set him straight, fried green tomatoes of course! My favorite is with a side of ranch. Also another favorite that some might think as odd is fried pickles.

One of my favorite restaurants on the planet is located in Spring, Texas. It's just north of Houston and it's called "Puffabelly's." They make the best fried green tomatoes and pickles. Being here about six months, I haven't found a restaurant here in the Metro that serves them but I'm more than willing to look.

Let Frank and I know any recipes you might have for the great veggie. I'm more than willing to cook them up and take those great looking tomatoes off his hands.

The Contest

Posted by: John Flick

So Tierney, Frank and I had this contest going on. Who could go the longest without turning on their heat. Today I was officially out of the contest. It got too cold last night. I have all wood floors in my home and it's not fun waking up at 3am, walking to the shower, and losing all feeling in your feet. I'm very competitive, so this was hard to take. Anyway, Frank and Tierney have been cheating a little. Frank's been running his fire place and Tierney cranks up her electric blanket to "inferno." Guess I'll have to wait until summer for the "last to turn on your a/c" contest.
Also, Tierney mentioned in her blog about me giving them "Dancing With The Stars" posters (I actually got them from our Promotions department). Right after I gave Frank his I noticed him on his computer. Turns out he was on ebay and saw that the posters are going for $10.00. Merry Christmas, Frank.

Global Warming = More Beer

Greenland's ice cap is melting twice as fast today as it was five years ago.... so what should we do with all of that water? Some people are making beer. The Greenland Brewhouse is the first microbrewery on Greenland, and they are located just 390 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The beer is brewed with water that has been stored in the ice sheet for at least 2000 years. The company is not destroying the ice sheet, but melting ice that has broken off the ice sheet, and is going to melt anyway. Since the ice has been there so long, it is completely free from pollution.

All of Greenland Brewhouse beer is brewed for export, since it is illegal to sell beer in Greenland.

John Flick and his Props

Posted by Tierney Cook

Did you catch the 6:30 am show this morning?
John Flick is our resident "Gallagher".
He is always pulling out show and tell props during the show.

This morning we were talking about "Dancing with the Stars", when all of a sudden John pulls out a monster size poster advertising the hit ABC show.

Well in the process I got a massive paper cut, and Frank almost lost his eye.
(You can see the whole thing under the Morning Moment section of this website)

I have to admit John keeps us on our toes.
I am always nervous when he leaves the set during commercial breaks; normally when he comes back he has something to share.

Until the next show and tell!

Until Next Year, Good Friend

Yesterday I said goodbye to my garden. Fearing a killing frost last night, I went and picked anything that would not survive the cold weather. Right now, my window sill is covered with green tomatoes.

Most of these will not turn red, but since I am a Yankee, I have never really had a taste for green tomatoes. I will probably end up looking for some way to cook these up, perhaps even can them.

I also picked all of my peppers. I don't know how many a peck is, but I sure picked alot. I double and triple checked the plants, because each time I thought I got them all, I ended up finding more. I plan on canning these today.

I also harvested the rest of my basil. I am going to make pesto to store in the freezer. I will have enough to last me until next spring's basil is nice and tall. While tearing up the garden, I also found a renegade cucumber, a small eggplant and two tennis ball sized cantaloupes. Although I am celebrating the end of the garden, I am still growing a few plants. I have lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower that can handle a light freeze. I have oregano that grows all winter long (I usually have to cut this back, it is more like a weed). My rosemary stays outside, and I already have garlic growing that will be ready next spring.

As I wrap up my garden for the 2006 growing season, I have to label this as a poor year for my garden. The heat and drought kept my yield far below previous years. The worst part was the loss of most of my raspberry bush to the heat. I cannot wait until next year to see how much bounces back. Until then, I am going to relax a bit. I will start next year's garden's seeds indoors in January.

Where I will be this Saturday...

Posted by: Tierney Cook

This Saturday at 5:45 am you will find me at Lake Overholser!!!!
It's time for the 4th Annual Race for the Rainbow Race for the Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation!

I am in charge of registering all the runners that morning and boy will it be cold!!!
I am a board member of the Brain Tumor Foundation.
My senior year of high school my mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor a hair from her spinal cord.

I remember the day she found out vividly.
I had picked up my little sister from school, we were arguing because she made me wait out front.
We walked into the kitchen, and my mom's head was laying on the table.
The argument immediatly stopped.
Her best friend was standing over her, and said, "We found out why your mom has been having all those headaches, they found a tumor." I ran out of the house full speed jumped in my car and drove to my best friends house.
When she (Brittny) opened the door I burst into tears!!!
I am not normally a crier but for days following the diagnosis I thought I would run out of tears.
Wondering would she miss my prom, graduation, first day of college all that!!!

We flew to Little Rock to meet with a brain surgeon.
My mom had brain surgery, recovered, and is doing well. I work with the foundation for her, and for other kids whose parents have tumors.
The foundation raises money to help families pay for the expensive surgeries, and provides emotional support families.
You can get more information on the foundation at WWW.OKBTF.ORG

And if you want you can come join me on race day this Saturday November 4th at Lake Overholser.
Bring the scarf, jacket and gloves though!
